Atkins Diet Food
Atkins Diet was created by Robert Atkins which he used to resolve his own overweight condition. Atkins diet is based on the theory that overweight people eat to much carbohydrates. This diet is a low carbohydrates lifestyle, it was the first low carb weight loss program.

Dr. Robert Atkins explains that our body burns first the carbohydrates for energy than fats. He concluded, by reducing the amount of carb intake and replacing it with more protein and fat, our body will naturally burn fats and loses weight without skipping any essential fats.

This diet plan encourages dieters to consume foods which are high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and no sugars. This diet plans is referred as "The Atkins Nutritional Approach". People who already tried this type of diet plan feel more energetic.

How Atkins Diet Works

Limiting the amount of carbohydrates which is found typically in American diet, our body goes into a state of ketosis which results in burning its own fats for fuel. When our body is in ketosis, we are going to feel less hungry, thus we likely eat less.

Eating high carbohydrate meal can increase the amount of sugar that enters the bloodstream. To keep the sugar rising to high in our blood, our body releases insulin. This will allow the extra sugar to be stored in liver and muscles as glycogen, but these stores are rapidly filled to capacity. This will then converts the extra amount of sugar into fats.

Phase 1 - Induction: This phase is intended to cause the body to rapidly enter into ketosis state. Limiting the number of carbohydrate intake to less than 20 grams which usually come from salads, fruits, and vegetables. This phase will take about two weeks and drinking eight glasses of water per day is a requirement during this phase.

Phase 2 - Ongoing Weight Loss(OWL): After limiting the amount of carbohydrate intake, during this phase you need to increase the carbohydrate consumption. You need to increase about five grams of carbohydrate intake each week. This phase lasts until weight is within 10lbs of the target weight.

Phase 3 - Pre-Maintenance: This time you need to increase your daily carb consumption by ten grams each week as long as you continue to lose your weight. During this phase, your body begins to lose the protection of ketosis. Once you begin to gain weight, you need to drop back 10 grams of carb intake in order to get the level without gaining.

Phase 4 - Lifetime Maintenance: At this phase, you already reached your goal wieght and learnt to select different foods offering the right amount of carbohydrates to maintain the weight loss. At this phase, you intended to carry the habits acquired from the previous phases.

Atkins diet is basically controlling the amount of carbohydrate intake. This diet plan gained popularity in 2003 and 2004 where sales in carbohydrate-heavy foods like pasta and rice declined.
